Terry was born as Terrance Patrick "Terry" Gannon on November 1, 1963, in Joliet, Illinois, U.S. Terry’s father was a coach. Terry went on to attend Joliet Catholic High School in Joliet, Illinois where he entered the baseball team. Soon after graduation in 1981, Terry went on to attend North Carolina State where he played college basketball. He is noted to be a two-time Academic All-America.

He made his stint in broadcasting in 1987 as the college analyst for Raycom Sports and Jefferson-Pilot Sports. He then also appeared as an announcer for college baseball. In 1991, he began the college basketball analyst for College Basketball on both ABC and ESPN. Since then he has gained wide recognition and credit for his work as a host and announcer in Wide World of Sports, college Football on ABC, Figure Skating on ABC PGA Tour on ABC and Golf on ESPN, WNBA on ESPN, Golf Channel. He began working for NBC Sports in 2010 as an announcer for Figure skating. He as hosted the NBA on ESPN. He is currently working as a substitute host on NBC’s Golf Channel
