He was born to Lebanese descent Terry O'Leary. His father worked as salesman and investor. His parents divorced when he was still a child. Soon after the divorce, his father passed away and business was carried forward by his mother. His mother then tied a knot with ILO (International Labour organization) employee George Kanawaty. Because of the job of stepfather his family was obliged to move frequently throughout many cities. As a child, he wanted to become a photographer but his stepfather motivated towards business. He earned a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and psychology in 1977 from the University of Waterloo. Later, he was promoted to brand manager for their cat food product line. After Nabisco, he shifted his career in Television program production. He co-founded Special Event Television (SET) along with his two MBA friends. One of his friends later bought all the stocks of the company and took ownership. After SET, he established another company called SoftKey in 1986. This company deals with the distribution and sales of CD-ROM of personal computers of both Windows and Macintosh. Kevin expanded the business of SoftKey with the production of bundled software for printers. Along with the success of the company, Kevin acquired many other companies such as WordStar, Spinnaker Software, The Learning Company (TLC).
In 2003, Kevin ventured his capital in StorageNow Holdings which was a developer of climate controlled storage facilities. His other investment portfolios include Genstar Capital, O'Leary Funds Inc and O'Leary Ventures. Apart from business, Kevin is also an author. Till to date, he has authored two books Cold Hard Truth: On Business, Money & Life and The Cold Hard Truth on Men, Women, and Money: 50 Common Money Mistakes and How to Fix Them. Kevin was seen as one of the five venture capitalists on CBC show Dragons' Den which is the Canadian version of Shark Tank. He also worked for the Discovery Channel's Discovery Project Earth as co-host. Kevin also appeared alongside journalist Amanda Lang on CBC News Network's The Lang and O'Leary Exchange.
