Candy Alt Crowley was born on December 26, 1948 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States to parents Richard C. Alt, Jr., and Nadine Leonard. She spent most of her childhood days in St. Louis, Missouri. Candy went on to attend Horace Greeley High School, Principia College based in St. Louis County. She then went on to join Randolph-Macon Woman's College based in Lynchburg, Virginia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Soon, Candy went on to begin her journalism career at WASH-FM in Washington D.C. as a newsroom assistant. She then went on to become an anchor for Mutual Broadcasting. She began working for NBC and CNN network in 1987. Candy appeared in the show, Inside Politics as a host. Soon, she became renowned as the anchor of State of the Union. She gained much credit when she became the moderator for the 2012 second presidential debate. Candy left CNN after her 27 years of service in 2014. Candy retired from her work in 2015. She is currently working as a paid guest speaker and is also a fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics.
